Judged by its size this book really deserves the name bible. There are several books on this subject out there, but the work of the two authors Lon Safko and David K. Brake is by far the most comprehensive one. They could have called it social media encyclopedia as well. More than 800 pages are filled with information on the background of social media, definitions of basic terms and tools, expert interviews and recommended strategies.

The book consists of three parts and begins with an introduction to social media. The authors describe in detail background basics and tactics such as content creation and sharing, microblogging and virtual worlds. Part two presents over 100 social media tools and applications in fifteen different categories. In addition many company profiles are included and expert interviews with top managers from Google, LinkedIn, MySpace, Twitter and many more give you a deeper insight into their thoughts on social media. Each chapter ends with a scorecard that enables readers to judge the value of each tool for their own company.

The third part focuses on the development of a social media strategy. It offers exercises for the reader – e.g. a social media SWOT analysis or the so called ACCESS model, a methodology for developing and connecting content to the ideal audience. If you follow the instructions of the book, fill out the scorecards and do the exercises, Safko and Brake will leave you with a 12 months implementation plan for your business at the end of this book.

The Social Media Bible is a useful and comprehensive book that covers every aspect of social media and makes a great reference book for newcomers and experts. And if you are still not satisfied, the authors offer additional content at their website.
